It's extremely easy and will save you lots of money. You don't need any fancy equipment either. This recipe doesn't even require a thermometer and has so far given me great results every time.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/11576067765/player/40a2854d87" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="400"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
2 litres of milk (cow's milk, any fat concentration)<br />
2-3 tbsp natural yogurt as starter (your yogurt must contain live and active cultures, just check labels on the yogurt at the grocery store if making yogurt for the first time or if you have run out of starter culture)<br />
<br />
Supplies:<br />
Pot for heating the milk<br />
Large spoon for stirring the milk<br />
2L plastic container<br />
Small spoon for spreading the starter culture<br />
<br />
Method:<br />
Pour the milk into a pot and heat on the stove top on medium heat, stirring often and keeping a close eye so the milk doesn't scald.<br />
Once the milk has boiled and looks foamy on top like cappuccino, turn off the heat.<br />
<br />
Protip 1: If you have a larger pot and a smaller pot, you could instead create a water jacket effect with some water in the larger pot and place the smaller pot in the water. This is a gentler way to heat the milk with less chance of scalding.<br />
Protip 2: Add milk powder to the milk while it's heating up if you like thicker yogurt.<br />
Protip 3: Longer boil times will also increase the thickness of the yogurt.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/11378873276/" title="Heating milk to make yogurt by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Heating milk to make yogurt" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7446/11378873276_76c787fa18.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Remove the milk from the heat and allow it to cool. To speed up the cooling process, you can fill a sink 1/4 of the way with cold water, carefully pour the milk into a large bowl, and place the bowl in the cold water. Stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming on the surface as the milk cools.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/11378871575/" title="Cooling milk to make yogurt by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Cooling milk to make yogurt" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3766/11378871575_372af8ddc2.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
You'll know the milk is ready when you dip your finger in and it's warmer than room temperature, but not hot. Next, spread 2-3 tablespoons of the yogurt inside a 2L plastic container.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/11576660543/player/7b088c3e6d" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="400"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
Pour the milk into the plastic container, put the lid on and wrap it in a towel to keep it warm (in winter or in cold climates, use a warm blanket instead of a towel to keep more heat in). Place the wrapped container into a dark cupboard and leave for approximately 7 hours. After about 7 hours (leave it an hour or two longer if using low fat or skim milk), the culture will have multiplied and when you lift the lid, voila! Beautiful homemade yogurt for a fraction of the cost!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/11263942013/" title="Homemade yogurt! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Homemade yogurt!" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7375/11263942013_9d671701bd.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Place the container in the fridge and enjoy! Just remember to save a small amount of the yogurt as starter (don't eat it all) so you can make a new batch. The yogurt will last for a week in the fridge. You can also add fresh fruit and/or honey to make it sweet. If I had known how cheap and easy it was, I would have started making my own yogurt years ago.Natalie Townsendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15752440346657173510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4402473577101803977.post-29579949644780250582013-11-30T22:27:00.000+10:302013-12-27T13:22:04.080+10:30Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery - Adelaide, South AustraliaA diamond in the rough, a needle in the haystack, an awesome bakery in the Para Hills Bridge Road Shopping Centre. It's not the kind of place you're likely to stumble upon, but it's well worth seeking out. Thuy Vu is the owner of Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery and she is clearly passionate about baking. After migrating to Australia from Vietnam on a refugee boat at age 18, she worked in a Salisbury bakery before later starting her own business in 2002. She's won numerous awards, some of which are proudly listed on the sign above the shop.<br />
<br />

<br />
Front and center as you walk into the shop is a glorious display of savoury pies, pasties and sausage rolls. The selection is quite impressive with all of the usual suspects and a few originals as well.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Look left or right and you'll see sweets galore. Cakes, tarts, lamingtons, slices and more. How's a girl to choose?<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/10621940125/" title="some of the sweets on display by natmeister, on Flickr"><br /><img alt="some of the sweets on display" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5502/10621940125_9b59d855f4.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The plain meat pie is generally a good indicator of bakery standards. This one looked good on the outside. Nice flaky pastry and beautifully golden in colour.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Biting into the Meat Pie ($4) and it's clear this is no ordinary bakery. It's not just good, it's great! Nice, quality beef in a smooth and tasty brown sauce.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
As an awesome twist on the great South Aussie pie floater, you'll find the Mushy Meat Pie ($4.50).<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
It's basically a Meat Pie but with mushy peas on top of the beef. Genius!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The meat pies are excellent, but my favourite pie from Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery would have to be the Tuna Mornay ($4.50). Bonus points for the fact that it comes with a little pastry fish on top.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/10338575823/" title="Tuna Mornay Pie by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Tuna Mornay Pie" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2862/10338575823_bf13d89a67.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
This pie is so ridiculously creamy, cheesy and delicious. If you like tuna, you will LOVE this pie!<br />

<br />
<br />
The Chicken Pie ($4.30) is my second favourite because it reminds me of chicken pot pies from my childhood. Hearty, warming and full of chicken and veggies.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/10621996436/" title="inside the chicken pie by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside the chicken pie" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7441/10621996436_89d9e000fe.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The best of the sweets that I've tried so far is the French Vanilla Slice ($3.50). The custard has a beautiful creamy smooth texture and a good strong vanilla flavour. The pastry is crunchy and flaky. This is a must try.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/10338445315/" title="Vanilla Slice by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Vanilla Slice" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7332/10338445315_f22012cbc6.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If you're looking for a great bakery in Adelaide's northern suburbs, look no further than Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery. They're open 7 days from 6am. If you want a particular item, I recommend getting there as early as you can or pre-ordering because they do sell out.<br />
<br />
P.S. The chocolate doughnuts aren't bad either.<br />

The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_Thins">Wheat Thins</a> I know and love from North America previously had to be sourced from places like <a href="http://www.usafoods.com.au/">USA Foods</a> in Australia. Not anymore! Granted, the Coles brand version isn't exactly like Nabisco's... but it's close. And at only $1.79 for 250 grams, not bad value either.
<br />

<br />
I'm also pretty happy with the list of ingredients. Definitely not the most unhealthy snack food on the market and I'm glad to see there are no <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoglyceride" target="_blank">monoglycerides</a> on the list. Interestingly, they are made in Canada. Coles also sells a Vegetable Wheat Thins variety (green box) which are good too, but the plain ones (orange box) are definitely my favourite. Give them a try and let me know what you think!<br />

One of the most recent additions to Adelaide's growing burger scene is Nordburger (168 The Parade, Norwood), which first opened its doors on the 4th of July 2013. Parking is easy since it's so close to Norwood Mall. Off street parking is available in the Coles carpark or across the road at the Foodland carpark.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478277632/" title="Nordburger & Norwood Mall entrance by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Nordburger & Norwood Mall entrance" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7397/9478277632_0aa1117c6e.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Though it may sound Scandinavian to some, the name "Nord" is also short for Norwood.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478273902/" title="Nordburger window by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Nordburger window" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7297/9478273902_dc448ce0a9.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Inside, it's a long and skinny shop with orders taken at the register near the entrance and a few stools for those choosing to eat in.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9475467645/" title="inside Nordburger by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Nordburger" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5482/9475467645_865142ac85.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If you can't find a seat along the main counter, there are a couple more seats as well as a couple of stand up tables at the back. Of course, take away is an option as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478257914/" title="Nord by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Nord" height="500" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5341/9478257914_cdbc606894.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We managed to snag ourselves a couple of stools and enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle of the kitchen, which included MasterChef 2011 runner-up Michael Weldon working the grill.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478260176/" title="Nordburger in action by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Nordburger in action" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2854/9478260176_9de7470846.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If you're after a cold drink, try a Dr Pepper, A&W Cream Soda, Cherry Coke, or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_(soft_drink)" target="_blank">TAB</a>. Or choose from one of the milkshakes...<br />
Classic: strawberry, vanilla or chocolate ($6)<br />
Specialties: pretzel, cornflake, salted caramel, or peanut butter & jelly ($7)<br />
We tried the salted caramel and loved it. I noticed they use Tweedvale milk too - great stuff!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478438426/" title="Cold Drinks by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Cold Drinks" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7303/9478438426_64f54b8761.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
On to the main event...the burger! We ordered a Nordburger ($7.80) which comes topped with pickles, tomato, lettuce, mustard, ketchup, and Nord sauce. We also added cheese ($0.70). The beef patty was seasoned and cooked perfectly and seemed a little bit thicker than some skimpy patties I've had elsewhere recently. Bun was fresh, toppings and sauces were all very tasty. This was an excellent burger!<br />
<br />
For sides, the choices were tater tots, crinkle cut fries or crinkle cut fries with chipotle seasoning (small $2.50/large $3). We ordered the crinkle cut fries (small) and Nord sauce ($0.50). When I saw the fries from a distance, I wasn't overly excited. Upon closer inspection however, they were nice and crunchy and not too heavy on the salt - very moreish. The Nord sauce is almost identical to <a href="http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=the%20lonley%20plate%20shake%20shack&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fthelonelyplate.blogspot.com%2F2011%2F02%2Fshake-shack-madison-square-park-nyc.html" target="_blank">Shake Shack</a>'s shack sauce (delicious) and was well worth the extra 50 cents for an excellent dipping sauce.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
We decided to try a hot dog as well, the New York ($5.90). Isn't it pretty? It's a Vienna sausage topped with pickled red onion, everything bagel (I think this is a reference to the poppy seeds & sesame seeds), mustard & ketchup. The bun was sturdy but soft. The sausage and toppings were well matched and very enjoyable.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/9478269174/" title="New York Hot Dog ($5.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="New York Hot Dog ($5.90)" height="500" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3703/9478269174_61aab999db.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
So far, we've thoroughly enjoyed everything we've consumed at Nordburger and we're looking forward to our next visit in the near future. Check them out if you can, but try to avoid peak meal times unless you're happy to line and up and possibly choose take away. Space is quite limited in the shop.<br />

This place has been a family run, Adelaide institution for over 35 years. We were a bit late to the party, but now we're hooked.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8726872505/" title="Asian Gourmet by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Asian Gourmet" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7433/8726872505_056ddc57c1.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
You can find Asian Gourmet inside the markets directly across from Camera House. They're open 6 days (closed Sundays) opening at 9:30 or 10:30am each day. Closing times vary from 3-5pm depending on the day and they stay open on Friday nights until 9pm. Seating is available both inside and outside the shop.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8726870543/" title="inside Asian Gourmet by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Asian Gourmet" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7438/8726870543_894b57033a.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The signature dish at Asian Gourmet is the Singapore Laksa ($9.50). The lime green bowl looks quite small, but it comes packed full of goodness - prawns, fried tofu, shredded chicken, bean sprouts, coconut cream, egg noodles and more. It's bigger than it looks and sure to satisfy. I haven't found a better laksa anywhere else in Adelaide. Beware though that the standard amount of chili is on the hot side so some may wish to ask for mild.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8726871171/" title="Singapore Laksa ($9.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Singapore Laksa ($9.50)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7326/8726871171_1010f81363.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
It's hard to go past the Singapore Laksa but everything else I've tried so far has been excellent as well. The Fried Seafood Hokkien Mee ($9.50) is full of seafood, in a slightly sweet sauce with a lemon wedge. Delicious!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8727990720/" title="Fried Seafood Hokkien Mee ($9.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Fried Seafood Hokkien Mee ($9.50)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7390/8727990720_714f0c2746.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Another one of my favourites is Fried Mee Hoon ($9.90). This comes with sliced pork, prawns, fried egg, bean sprouts and thin rice noodles. Again, the default amount of chili is on the hot side so keep this in mind when ordering.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8754686457/" title="Fried Mee Hoon by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Fried Mee Hoon" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7364/8754686457_fd5a40f1d7.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We're very fortunate to have the Lo family cooking great value Malaysian favourites for us in the Adelaide Central Markets. We've become regular customers at Asian Gourmet and have even fallen in love with laksa for breakfast!<br />
<br />

This is a Sydney institution, selling burgers long before fast food chains like Hungry Jack's or McDonald's came along.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663573521/" title="Paul's Famous Hamburgers by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Paul's Famous Hamburgers" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8245/8663573521_567ec6897b.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
It's important to note that Paul's is closed on Mon & Tues. Luckily, we visited on a Wednesday so they were open for business!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663588685/" title="opening hours - closed Mon & Tues by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="opening hours - closed Mon & Tues" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8253/8663588685_1d34b7c3dd.jpg" width="333" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Inside the shop, they proudly display that they were established in 1957. I have a feeling they haven't changed too much since then either.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663591837/" title="inside Paul's by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Paul's" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8239/8663591837_1f835d2b65.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The menu includes Hamburgers (with various toppings), Chips, Milk Shakes & Fresh Pineapple Crush.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663595173/" title="menu by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="menu" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8263/8663595173_933f2139b6.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We considered a milk shake (there were heaps of flavours to choose from) but we decided to try the Fresh Pineapple Crush. This drink is really special as it's real pineapple juice with plenty of pulp as well. Tarty, sweet, and very refreshing! The food comes in a white paper bag. Based on my observations of other customers, it's common practice to rip the bag open to get to your food. This indicated to me that what's inside must be pretty good.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663583233/" title="Pineapple Crush ($3.20) & lunch bag by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pineapple Crush ($3.20) & lunch bag" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8250/8663583233_b872505af3.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We decided to go with a Plain Hamburger ($5.90), a Works Burger ($8.90), and a Small order of Chips ($3.80). The chips were impressive - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with an appropriate amount of chicken salt (optional).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8664680658/" title="Lunch is served! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Lunch is served!" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8262/8664680658_8faf11eab0.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The Plain Hamburger was an excellent example of an Aussie fish 'n chip shop burger. The bun was fresh, it had plenty of salad and sauce, and the meat was well seasoned.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8663575607/" title="Plain Hamburger ($5.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Plain Hamburger ($5.90)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8254/8663575607_b416dca546.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The Plain Hamburger was good, but the standout burger was definitely the Works. It had an abundance of toppings - tomato, lettuce, onion, tomato sauce, egg, bacon, cheese & pineapple. Each topping was excellent quality and the bold flavours somehow worked together perfectly. The size of the burger made for a challenging but rewarding bite.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8664678060/" title="Works Burger ($8.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Works Burger ($8.90)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8266/8664678060_15d5cba3b7.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If you're in Sydney, make sure you visit Paul's Famous Hamburgers for a great Aussie style burger & chips with Pineapple Crush to drink. There's a reason they've been in business for 55+ years.<br />

Even though we had already eaten lunch, we had to stop and check this place out.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8573651261/" title="Jaffle King! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Jaffle King!" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8573651261_0faf817f71.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I had no earthly idea what a jaffle was, as this is an Australian term I hadn't come across before. I was keen to try one for myself. As we approached the front door, a lady waiting inside began giving me and my camera a constant evil stare. Needless to say, I was a little freaked out so no pictures were taken inside. This is unfortunate because the inside looked like it hadn't changed for decades. The shop was filled with all of the usual takeaway options as well as some special touches like fried chicken. We spotted a Ham, Cheese and Tomato Jaffle and a Caramel Macadamia pie calling our names. It turned out that these were both great choices. The caramel macadamia pie was filled with gooey, dense caramel and the crust was the perfect thickness and very fresh. The macadamias on top added some crunch and even more flavour. Sweet, salty & delicious!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8577468776/" title="Caramel Macadamia pie & Jaffle! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Caramel Macadamia pie & Jaffle!" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8512/8577468776_a347534686.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Now to the main event: the jaffle! A jaffle is basically just a toasted sandwich but because of the cooking method, the ingredients get sealed inside so it's pretty magical. The outside of the jaffle, I later found out is usually just normal white bread. I wouldn't have guessed this based on the texture and flavour of the final product. To make a jaffle, you butter the outside of both pieces of bread, put one piece of bread into the jaffle iron (a hinged skillet - either round or square) butter side down, place your fillings on top of the first piece of bread, place the second piece of bread on top of the fillings butter side up, close the jaffle iron , trim the excess bread from the outside, and cook it over the stove or an open flame. They also make electric jaffle irons if you prefer.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8573644879/" title="A Jaffle! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="A Jaffle!" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8102/8573644879_88738181ce.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
As tasty as it was, apparently ham cheese & tomato is not the most popular jaffle. Much more popular fillings are: baked beans & cheese, or tinned/leftover spaghetti. You can even make sweet jaffles like apple & cinnamon for dessert.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8573634343/" title="Ham Cheese & Tomato Jaffle by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Ham Cheese & Tomato Jaffle" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8573634343_89e4af8a59.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
After returning home, I started trying to find out more about Jaffle King. Turns out this is the only full fledged location. The only other one I could find is in a petrol station in Mount Gambier. Next time we're in Millicent, South Australia we will definitely be stopping in at Jaffle King & Karvery for some more great take away. If you can't make it to Jaffle King, you might consider purchasing a jaffle iron so you can try to replicate some of your own jaffle magic at home.<br />

These lamingtons are so good that they won 1st Prize in the 2008 National Baking Awards in Sydney. Kytons products are mostly sold as fundraisers for community groups and sporting clubs across South Australia and Victoria.You can also find them in most FoodLand and IGA stores as well as a selection of other retailers. We purchased this pack from our local FoodLand for Australia Day and loved every bite.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8415651219/" title="Kytons Bakery Lamingtons for Australia Day by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Kytons Bakery Lamingtons for Australia Day" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8331/8415651219_fa98720845.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
In addition to their amazing lamingtons, Kytons also sells hot cross buns in the lead up to Easter. This year, they've partnered with Menz to produce the new hot cross buns with FruChocs!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8539680183/" title="Kytons Hot Cross Buns FruChocs by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Kytons Hot Cross Buns FruChocs" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8242/8539680183_89fb7fe930.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
This might sound like a strange combination to some, but it totally works! First, slice open the bun to reveal the awesome FruChocs inside. <a href="http://robernmenz.com.au/fruchocs" target="_blank">FruChocs</a> are a South Australian icon, now sold nationwide. Note that due to pronunciation problems interstate they're called Choc Apricot Balls outside of SA. FruChocs are so awesome they even have their own <a href="http://robernmenz.com.au/fruchocs/fruchocs_appreciation_society" target="_blank">Appreciation Society</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8547389378/" title="Fruchocs inside the hot cross bun by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Fruchocs inside the hot cross bun" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8391/8547389378_fe8ec7e4da.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I like to slice the hot cross bun in half and spread some butter or margarine inside. Next I recommend lightly toasting them before serving with a cuppa tea.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8544521008/" title="Kyton's Hot Cross Buns with FruChocs by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Kyton's Hot Cross Buns with FruChocs" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8104/8544521008_eabb65cca8.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The chocolate melts, the apricot stays chewy, and the edges get toasted and crunchy. They taste like a mix between fruit-filled and chocolate buns so they're a hybrid hot cross bun that is the perfect celebration of South Australia.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8543418789/" title="Kytons Hot Cross Buns with FruChocs by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Kytons Hot Cross Buns with FruChocs" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8388/8543418789_88d0f73e38.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I hope everyone buys the new Kytons hot cross buns with FruChocs this year to ensure they keep making them every year. Check the list of <a href="http://www.kytonsbakery.com.au/stockists/" target="_blank">Stockists</a> (alphabetical by suburb) to see where you can get yours.<br />

The staff at Daily Choice were churning out sandwiches to queues of hungry customers long before the trendy Soonta Rolls and Miss Mai came along. Since the arrival of these new competitors in nearby James Place, Daily Choice is definitely less busy than in the past, but you may still need to line up with loyal customers for one of their old school Vietnamese rolls. You won't wait long though because staff are efficient and the line moves quickly. If you do go down the banh mi path, you can choose Lemongrass Chicken, BBQ Pork, Stewed Beef, Vietnamese Ham, or Crispy Skin Roast Pork for $4.50. Or if you can't pick just one, go for the Combination Roll for $5.50.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7188712783/" title="Daily Choice by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Daily Choice" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7244/7188712783_4b62d54f27.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If you're keen on a lighter option and/or want to skip the queue, walk straight up to the little fridge on the left and go for my favourite - a pack of their awesome cold rolls. You can get Chicken, BBQ Pork, Prawn or a combo pack. 2 rolls costs $4.20. A pack of 2 Vegetarian rolls is only $3.30. These are not your average cold rolls - they're jumbo sized. They also come with a choice of either Hoisin or Sweet Chilli dipping sauce.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7188714283/" title="Chicken & Pork Cold Rolls ($4.20) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Chicken & Pork Cold Rolls ($4.20)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7081/7188714283_db9349cc4c.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Chicken & Pork cold rolls ($4.20)</span><br />
<br />
The quality and freshness is consistently good, the sauce is tasty, the price is right, and they're both filling and relatively healthy so the cold rolls from Daily Choice are in my regular rotation for city lunches.<br />
<br />
Protip: Due to the ginormous size of these cold rolls, I recommend dipping prior to the first bite, then carefully pouring a little bit of sauce prior to each subsequent bite. This pour method avoids the contents of the roll ending up in the sauce. Just make sure you ration your sauce so you don't run out before you finish the second roll. Enjoy!<br />

The inaugural event was held on 30 Nov 2012 in Victoria Square. People must be loving it because the turnout was HUGE!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8232545073/" title="Fork on the Road by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Fork on the Road" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8345/8232545073_764ecce551.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The second Fork On The Road was held on 21 Dec 2012 in Hindmarsh Square. This was the first day we discovered newcomer <a href="http://www.facebook.com/adelaidesownsneakypickle" target="_blank">Sneaky Pickle</a>! The truck's name and paint job were just too awesome to pass up.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8293429422/" title="welcome, Sneaky Pickle! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="welcome, Sneaky Pickle!" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8353/8293429422_464033b74b.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
When I saw Fried Pickles ($5) on the menu I simply had to try them. The crunch from the batter and the crunch from the pickle make for a perfectly sneaky, crunchy combo. The fried pickles come with a zesty creamy mayo for dipping too. They're salty, sour, and divine! I'd choose these over chips (french fries) any day.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8293431196/" title="Fried Pickles - YES PLEASE by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Fried Pickles - YES PLEASE" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8212/8293431196_0a32c62e47.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We also ordered the Pastrami on Rye with slaw & pickles ($9). If you're not familiar with pastrami, it's basically smoked corned beef. Pastrami was brought to the United States by Romanian Jewish immigrants in the late 1800's and first became popular in New York City at places like <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/katzs-delicatessen-e-houston-street-nyc.html" target="_blank">Katz's Deli</a>. Sneaky Pickle makes their own pastrami and puts some thin sliced rye bread around it.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8292381231/" title="pastrami on rye by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="pastrami on rye" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8218/8292381231_7b45e2790f.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The sandwich comes standard with cheese and mustard, but I also like to add some of the self-serve bbq sauce. Along with the sandwich you also get a side of creamy slaw and two slices of dill pickle. Yum!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8292379619/" title="Pastrami on Rye with slaw & pickles by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pastrami on Rye with slaw & pickles" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8292379619_fdd6cf32b5.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The newest item on the menu is Texas Pulled Pork w/ BBQ Corn & Bread 'n Butter Pickles ($9).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8366596708/" title="Texas Pulled Pork w/ BBQ Corn & b+b pickles ($9) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Texas Pulled Pork w/ BBQ Corn & b+b pickles ($9)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8362/8366596708_c4c5267e57.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
This sandwich is soft, juicy, and very moreish with a great crunch from the coleslaw. This is the best pulled pork I've had so far in Adelaide and I think it's going to be very tough to beat.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8365528015/" title="Pulled Pork ($9) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pulled Pork ($9)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8188/8365528015_d4a8afbe65.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Sneaky Pickle definitely adds distinct flavours and styles to Adelaide's street food scene. The quality and uniqueness of the food will keep me coming back. The best way to keep tabs on where to find Sneaky Pickle is via <a href="http://www.facebook.com/adelaidesownsneakypickle" target="_blank">Facebook</a> or <a href="https://twitter.com/Sneaky_Pickle" target="_blank">Twitter</a>.<br />
<br />
Update 21 Jan 2013:<br />
Last week, Sneaky Pickle added a new sandwich into their rotation - The Reuben ($9). Corned beef, melted swiss cheese, and sauerkraut on toasted rye bread. It also comes with a great homemade tangy Russian dressing which is perfect for dipping. Sides of crinkle cut potato chips and a sneaky pickle round out the meal. This is my new favourite menu item and I highly recommend everyone to try the Reuben as soon as you can.<br />

We loved the Melbourne location so much that we kept going back so we couldn't believe our eyes when the first Adelaide location opened several months ago on Gouger Street. First <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/search/label/breadtop" target="_blank">Breadtop</a> came to Adelaide, then <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/2011/12/mothers-crepe-adelaide-south-australia.html" target="_blank">Mother's Crepe</a>, now this! Life is good.<br />

<br />
<br />
As you walk in, the glow of the orange lanterns welcomes you before the sheer size of the menu overwhelms you. There's certainly no lack of choices with Taiwanese and Hong Kong style desserts as well as drinks on offer. The vast majority of the menu is priced around $6-$8, which makes for a very reasonably priced dessert.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7794405410/" title="inside Dessert Story by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Dessert Story" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8439/7794405410_04275057d1.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The gigantic menu can be broken down into the following:<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b><u>Taiwanese Desserts</u></b> (in black bowl/plate) - </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Taro, Herbal Jelly, Black Glutinous Rice, Puddings, Tofu Puddings, Snow Ice and Crushed Ice.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b><u>Hong Kong Desserts</u> </b>(in orange bowl) - </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Sago or Black Pearl Soup, Tofu Pudding, Black Glutinous Rice, Grass Jelly, Ice Cream.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b><u>Fruit Smoothies</u></b> (in clear plastic cup) - </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Drinks with some choices containing predefined ingredients or you can build your own combinations.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Choose your category, then choose the specific item number. It's best to order by number rather than name because the names are very similar. You may be asked if you'd like your dessert hot or cold. I generally go with cold because I like to eat the ice. If you choose hot it will come in a warm soup. After ordering at the counter, you'll be given a number on a little stand. Staff will compile the ingredients, find your number and deliver the order to your table.</div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7920145364/" title="Dessert Story front counter by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Dessert Story front counter" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/7920145364_ef77a7c0e1.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
I'm not a fan of the Herbal Jelly or the Grass Jelly. I think they must be an acquired taste in a similar way to Vegemite. I've tried most of the other categories and my pick of the entire menu is #15 - Taro Balls with Honey Bean, Coconut Jelly, Pearls ($6.80). I love the different textures and flavours. This one is quite filling as well so can be shared between two people if you're not overly hungry.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8312529817/" title="#15 Taro Balls with Honey Bean, Coconut Jelly, Pearls ($6.80) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="#15 Taro Balls with Honey Bean, Coconut Jelly, Pearls ($6.80)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8211/8312529817_16d945cefb.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The fruit smoothies are fun too, especially if you enjoy different textures in your drinks like pearls, jellies or fruit. Here's one of the set options: Mango Coconut drink ($5.90).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7855030524/" title="Mango Coconut drink ($5.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Mango Coconut drink ($5.90)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8307/7855030524_db4e9b2a8e.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
It's also important to note that the ice shaving machine is a penguin. This is awesome because he's cute (see red bow tie), appropriate (penguins and ice go together), and useful (he shaves ice for the cold desserts).<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7807244036/" title="inside Dessert Story by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Dessert Story" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8446/7807244036_1428816a8e.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I strongly believe that the negative reviews online are mostly due to the fact that people in Adelaide have no idea what to order. This is completely understandable as we've never had this kind of dessert shop in Adelaide before. It takes a bit of patience and adventure to navigate the myriad of choices, but it's well worth the effort. Dessert Story in Adelaide is one of my favourite stops for sweets because their desserts are different, affordable, and fun.</div>

They're already off to a great start and serving up some awesome burgers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8174269385/" title="outside Relish'd Burger Bar by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="outside Relish'd Burger Bar" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8174269385_93258401ee.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The surf theme works really well and gives the place a nice summery vibe.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8177359028/" title="inside Relish'd by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Relish'd" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8070/8177359028_ea1055b7a7.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The menu includes several types of burgers: moo (beef), chook (chicken), lamb, and vego. All burgers come topped with their namesake tomato relish, which is made onsite. They also offer chips, salads, a kids meal (called a Grom Pack) and coffee, tea & hot chocolate. On weekends, breakfast is available from 8-11am.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8174312492/" title="menu & kitchen by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="menu & kitchen" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8201/8174312492_9b6ca3f9ee.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
For our first visit, we started with a classic Relish'd Burger ($8.90). It comes with lettuce, tomato, spanish onion, fresh herb aioli & relish. Burgers come with a knife which keeps everything together and can be used for slicing it for easy consumption.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8174314782/" title="Relish'd Burger ($8.90) snack size chips ($3) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Relish'd Burger ($8.90) snack size chips ($3)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8479/8174314782_8b89d1020a.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
The toasted <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/search/label/breadtop" target="_blank">Breadtop</a> bun and freshly ground beef are key elements carefully selected and paired with excellent quality fresh veggies. The relish & aioli take the burger's flavour to the next level. This is one awesome burger and now holds the title of my favourite burger in Adelaide.<br />
<br />
The rosemary sea salted chips are very moreish. In addition to their great flavour and chunky size, they're less greasy than normal fish and chip shop chips. Good thing we only bought the Snack Size ($3) because I could eat a truck load of these.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8174320278/" title="a peek inside the Relish'd Burger - fantastic stuff by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="a peek inside the Relish'd Burger - fantastic stuff" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8174320278_14a1005b84.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We also enjoyed the BLT Chook burger ($11.90). Good quality chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, fresh herb aioli & relish combine for another great burger.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8174316844/" title="BLT Chook Burger ($11.90) snack size chips ($3) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="BLT Chook Burger ($11.90) snack size chips ($3)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8174316844_840c7790b2.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We left feeling very satisfied and amazed. The food showed a lot of care and was packed full of excellent quality local ingredients. If you haven't tried these burgers, you're seriously missing out.<br />

One solution is take away sushi from the David Jones Sushi Bar.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7744300812/" title="Sushi Bar (left) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sushi Bar (left)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7264/7744300812_d2629e53aa.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Look for the orange "Sushi Bar" sign located downstairs inside David Jones itself (not in the food court).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7722681668/" title="Sushi Bar by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sushi Bar" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8293/7722681668_f12caa0c07.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
You will find a large glass case full of quality take away packs of sushi made daily. Packs range from medium to large in size and sell for about $8-14 per pack.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7722827894/" title="Sushi Boxes by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sushi Boxes" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7135/7722827894_2ea98067bc.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
There are also a number of single sushi rolls for $2.95 each such as Tempura Prawn, California Roll, Teriyaki Salmon & Avocado, Salmon & Avocado, Cooked Tuna & Avocado, Chicken Katsu, and Teriyaki Chicken & Avocado.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7722682570/" title="Sushi by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sushi" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7722682570_2c88b13dc4.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The take away sushi rolls come in a clear plastic wrapper for easy transport. A small plastic fish containing soy sauce is also enclosed. Here is the Teriyaki Chicken & Avocado roll ($2.95).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7722832774/" title="Teriyaki Chicken & Avocado Sushi Roll ($2.95) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Teriyaki Chicken & Avocado Sushi Roll ($2.95)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7722832774_22ce4e4346_z.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Instead of the nori (seaweed) wrapping around the outside like most sushi rolls, the sushi rolls from David Jones have the rice on the outside and the nori on the inside. This is sometimes referred to as an "inside out" sushi roll. The result of this construction is a slightly different flavour and experience which I really enjoy. Protip: Do not remove the sushi from its wrapper but simply peel the wrapper open. The clear plastic will easily split down the seams on the sides. This method is demonstrated below with the Chicken Katsu roll ($2.95).</div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7722836818/" title="protip: peel back the clear wrapper by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="protip: peel back the clear wrapper" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7280/7722836818_15e951defe_z.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
There's also an eat in menu available with a variety of made to order plates which look quite tasty, but the take away options seem to be the most popular. With so many places around Adelaide to buy sushi, it can be difficult to decide where to go. David Jones Sushi Bar is at the top of my list of tried and tested sushi favourites in the city.<br />
<br />
Update 30 April 2014: Due to the closure of Food Glorious Food, David Jones Sushi has relocated to Cafe Delores in Renaissance Arcade!<br />

Tan Nhu Y was closed for a couple of years for renovations and reopened in 2010. The new building has large windows facing Hanson Road, letting in plenty of light. Guests are warmly welcomed by owner Hang, a bright and bubbly personality who takes the place from good to great by ensuring her guests always enjoy their experience here.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911476234/" title="inside Tan Nhu Y by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Tan Nhu Y" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/7911476234_51922c7a34.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The restaurant owners are Vietnamese and the chef is Chinese so the menu has an expansive range from both of these cuisines. We've tried a few Chinese dishes which were excellent, but the Vietnamese lunch specials and drinks are what have kept us coming back. The cold rolls are very fresh with a both prawn and pork fillings in every roll. A serve of 3 Cold Rolls is $6.20.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911474340/" title="Cold Rolls (3 for $6.20) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Cold Rolls (3 for $6.20)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8459/7911474340_9b7b37b071.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I reckon half the fun of eating at a Vietnamese restaurant is exploring the drinks menu and one of my favourites is the classic <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/2010/05/vietnamese-three-colour-bean-drink.html" target="_blank">Three Colour Bean Drink</a> ($4).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911472610/" title="Three Colour Bean Drink ($4) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Three Colour Bean Drink ($4)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7911472610_577a91e4ab.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
They also offer a nice and thick Avocado Milkshake for $4.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911490838/" title="Avocado Milkshake ($4) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Avocado Milkshake ($4)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8181/7911490838_d0c4a672a6.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
But the absolute pick of the drinks menu is the Tropical Fruit Drink for $4.50. It comes in this bowl of a glass with a spoon and a straw so you can both eat and drink it to your heart's content. The drink contains actual fruit pieces such as jackfruit and lychee plus coconut cubes and various jellies in pretty colours with sweet coconut milk and shaved ice bringing it all together. I haven't seen this drink anywhere else, which is yet another reason why I'm a big fan of Tan Nhu Y.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7991048579/" title="Tropical Fruit Drink ($4.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Tropical Fruit Drink ($4.50)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8039/7991048579_64a67fe84b.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
On to the food...the lunch specials are awesome. Here's the Special Broken Rice (small - $10). You can get it with Pork Skin if you want, but we usually go without. I've not had a better broken rice plate anywhere. It's top notch every time.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911489478/" title="Special Broken Rice (small - $10) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Special Broken Rice (small - $10)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8169/7911489478_64de46140c.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
A new favourite dish of mine is Rice Vermicelli with Prawn-Pie on Sugar Cane (small - $12). If you dig under the noodles you'll find sliced cucumber, lettuce, and herbs. Pour the sauce and shredded carrot over the top and mix around for a great feast. This dish is also available with Spring Rolls or Steak instead of the Prawn-Pie if you prefer, but this one is my pick of the three.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/8015203220/" title="Rice Vermicelli with Prawn-Pie on Sugar Cane (small - $12) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Rice Vermicelli with Prawn-Pie on Sugar Cane (small - $12)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8318/8015203220_6708e670c4.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The pho (beef noodle soup) is also fantastic. If you're new to pho, I'd recommend the standard Sliced Rare Beef (small - $9). The broth is divine with great depth of flavour and has minimal oil. It's a very cleansing meal and leaves you feeling refreshed. Here is the Sliced Rare Beef & Cooked Beef Brisket Pho (small - $10).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7911477812/" title="Sliced Rare Beef & Cooked Beef Brisket Pho (small - $10) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sliced Rare Beef & Cooked Beef Brisket Pho (small - $10)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8034/7911477812_1f247eaa76.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
A nice finishing touch is the complimentary Vietnamese jellies, which are brought to your table. These are not overly sweet, but rather a more subtle flavour with the emphasis on the texture.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7948874762/" title="Complimentary Vietnamese sweets by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Complimentary Vietnamese sweets" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/7948874762_c67a12d50a.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Pay a visit to Hang and her staff and you're sure to have an enjoyable meal. If there's anything you're unhappy with, just let her know and she'll happily replace it for you. Tan Nhu Y is open 7 days for dinner and Fri-Tues for lunch.<br />

<br />
Walk up to the counter to place your order. There's certainly no shortage of hot drinks to choose from, including coffees, T2 teas, chai lattes, and a variety of hot chocolates.<br />

<br />
On our most recent visit, Darren went with his usual Cafe Latte (large - $4.90).<br />

<br />
I went with the White Hot Chocolate ($4.40). I especially enjoyed the amazing froth with bubbles that continued to burst for a few minutes after arriving at the table. The flavour was impressive too, very smooth and creamy as a white hot chocolate should be.<br />
<br />

<br />
The breakfasts at Blond are brilliant. Darren's favourite is the Blond Big Breakfast ($21.50). Seems a little pricey for breakfast but the quality and quantity is all there so it's money well spent. You get Rosie's free range eggs cooked the way you like, Mount Pleasant bacon, breakfast sausages, spinach, mushrooms, tomato & sourdough toast.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7524099812/" title="Blond Big Breakfast ($21.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Blond Big Breakfast ($21.50)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8282/7524099812_95e6e1223f.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
If you're looking for something smaller, go for the Scrambled Toastie ($10.50). It's filled with Rosie's free range scrambled eggs, Mount Pleasant bacon, tomato and cheddar cheese. I usually get strange looks if I ask for scrambled eggs in a breakfast sandwich, so I was delighted to find this sandwich on the menu. The cheese helped hold the egg in place so there were no problems with anything falling out.<br />
<br />

<br />
On another visit, I was lucky enough to find this special on the menu - Blond Potato Hash, Chorizo, Cheddar Cheese & Spring Onion, topped w/a Poached Egg. The dish was delicious and refreshingly different from the usual standard bacon and egg breakfast. Specials change depending on the day so keep your eye on the specials board.<br />

<br />
<br />
Before you leave, be sure to also check out the shop at the back of the cafe where you can buy gifts, T2 teas, and local produce such as Rosie's free range eggs and Mount Pleasant bacon.<br />

Blond Coffee is definitely my pick for breakfast in the Barossa Valley.<br />

The truck, cleverly named Truck Norris, was looking great with a shiny fitout and orange decor. They even had a working EFTPOS facility from day one. Very professional.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7778909786/" title="In the queue for first service by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="In the queue for first service" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8445/7778909786_5882f852d6.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The large turnout presented a challenge for the 3 staff working in the truck. However, they were quite organised and did an excellent job for their first go. Quesadillas were also on the menu but these have since been scrapped and it's just tacos now. Probably for the best as the quesadillas were difficult to eat standing up. Here's the Chicken Taco (left) and Beef Taco (right) from the first ever service.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7778906820/" title="Chicken Taco (left), Beef Taco (right) ($4.50 each) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Chicken Taco (left), Beef Taco (right) ($4.50 each)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8304/7778906820_a19db19b65.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Week two was set to involve a showdown at high noon between La Cantina Co and Burger Theory in Hindmarsh Square. However, the driver of a black Porsche SUV decided to abandon his car for almost 3 hours in a 1 hour parking zone and poor Truck Norris was unable to fit. Apparently the Porsche driver was rightly told off by the angry taco mob when he finally returned but it was too late for me as I was already back at work by then. I vowed to return the following week.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7842324704/" title="parallel parking nightmare by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="parallel parking nightmare" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7842324704_b62c911514.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The taco gods were smiling for week three which was, thankfully, free from parking dramas. The new chalkboard menu listed four different tacos at $5 each or 2 for $9:<br />
<ul>
<li>Beef, black bean & chorizo with pico de gallo, cheese & guacamole</li>
<li>Smoked Chicken al cabron with pico de gallo, sour cream & corriander</li>
<li>Spiced Pork & potato with pineapple salsa & corriander</li>
<li>Zucchini & mushroom with cheese, lime & corriander</li>
</ul>

<br />
<br />
All sounded great and I couldn't decide so I ordered 4 tacos, one of each. This way I got to try them all and take some home for dinner as well. Protip: They reheat quite well in a skillet or fry pan on the stove top.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
You may have spotted Jarritos sodas around town. These are imported from Mexico and available from the truck for $4. Very refreshing!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
With great new additions such as La Cantina Co and the continuation of <a href="http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/services/permits-licenses/activating-adelaide-splash-adelaide/street-food-in-the-city/" target="_blank">Splash Adelaide</a> to the end of Dec 2012, the future of street food in Adelaide has never looked brighter.<br />

If you're near Prospect Road at Prospect, it's definitely worth stopping in for European style cakes, coffees & biscuits.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6692626001/" title="Muratti Cakes & Gateaux by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Muratti Cakes & Gateaux" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6692626001_b1bc546b7b.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
The display case is full of biscuits, macarons, gateaux, cakes, tarts, crumbles and more. It's torture trying to decide between so many sweet temptations. If you want to share with friends and family, go for one of the full sized cakes on the bottom shelf. You're sure to find the perfect choice among the range of sizes, prices and flavours on offer. There's definitely something for everyone.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6692629707/" title="ooo lala by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="ooo lala" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7035/6692629707_893673dbc1.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Or if you're like me and can't pick just one, go for a sampling of smaller individual cakes instead. The Blueberry Cheesecake ($4.90, top right in photo below) is my favourite for its dense, smooth, and creamy richness. Darren's favourite is the Mille Feuilles, which means "thousand sheets" ($5.20 - bottom left in photo below). It's an awesome French version of a vanilla slice made up of three layers of pastry with creme patissiere between. Also pictured is the Chocolate Blackberry ($6.80 - top left) and the Vanilla Bean ($6.80 - bottom right).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6692631267/" title="cakes! by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="cakes!" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7156/6692631267_df0579f5c8.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Another of our samplings of individual cakes consisted of (clockwise from center): Citron Flan ($4.80), French Cherry ($6.80), Blueberry Cheesecake ($4.90), Muratelli ($6.80), and Berry Apple ($6.80). Each cake is perfectly executed and definitely worth the calories.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7507646068/" title="Darren's cakes by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Darren's cakes" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7136/7507646068_925def0ddc.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We usually order our cakes to go, but I hear the coffee is worth staying for. If you don't have room for cake, you can always go with one of the various biscuits instead. Apparently the quality and selection of Muratti biscuits are admired almost as much as their cakes.<br />

It's not because we don't enjoy their delicious gourmet baked goods, it's just that we enjoy them a little too much. We recently reaquainted ourselves with the Red Door...probably put on a few kilos in the process, but it was worth it.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7756908368/" title="outside Red Door Bakery by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="outside Red Door Bakery" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8422/7756908368_b31ecfa1ca.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The pies and sausage rolls aren't your typical corner bakery offerings. These are quite possibly the best specimens you will ever consume and thus are a bit dearer than you're probably used to - $5.90 for pies and $5 for sausage rolls. Trust me, it's money well spent!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7756910304/" title="Pies & Sausage Rolls by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pies & Sausage Rolls" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7270/7756910304_2f173affba_z.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I've heard a great deal about the brilliance of the Pork & Sage Sausage Roll, but not much about the pies. I decided to take home a Traditional Chicken Pie, as sausage rolls aren't really my cuppa tea.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7757170806/" title="Traditional Chicken Pie ($5.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Traditional Chicken Pie ($5.90)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7757170806_48db0a7ab2.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
This was most definitely the best traditional chicken pie I've ever had. The chicken was moist, the pastry buttery and flaky, and the veggies provided further flavour to the equation. This is a pie I would definitely go out of my way for again. Big thumbs up!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7757175784/" title="inside the Traditional Chicken Pie by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside the Traditional Chicken Pie" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7757175784_e9747a0491.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
On to the danishes and croissants. More tough choices here...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7756911852/" title="pastries by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="pastries" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8448/7756911852_d5e99a28fa.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I went for the Rhubarb Danish for $4.50. This was excellent - tarty with a little vanilla custard underneath. The rhubarb was so nice and sweet that I was wishing for a few more pieces that went all the way to the edge of the danish.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7757168998/" title="Rhubarb Danish ($4.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Rhubarb Danish ($4.50)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8292/7757168998_840aee7508.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
On to the tarts, sandwiches & pizzas - oh my! One Creme Brule Tart ($4.50) and one Salted Caramel Belgian Chocolate Brick ($4.50) came home with us as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7756914170/" title="Tarts, Sandwiches & Pizzas by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Tarts, Sandwiches & Pizzas" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8308/7756914170_f57bbb29a2.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The Creme Brule Tart had that glassy top that cracks when you cut or bite into it. If you're a fan of creme brule in general, this is a must try.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7757172860/" title="Creme Brule Tart ($4.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Creme Brule Tart ($4.50)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8284/7757172860_74af7325a1.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
We cut the Salted Caramel Belgian Chocolate Brick in half with a butter knife. For a brick it was actually not very hard at all. The caramel oozed out of the center and was very inviting. When they say salted, they mean salted - it's just on the border of becoming savoury. Very enjoyable.<br />

<br />
<br />
Red Door is definitely one of Adelaide's best bakeries. The quality is top notch and word has definitely spread. They now have a second location on King William Road, Goodwood. So....skinny Adelaideans, get on over there!<br />

The place has been buzzing since it first opened in February 2012 and doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. With plenty of hungry clientele within walking distance and no bookings taken, you're lucky if you don't have to wait for a table at Lupitas.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513578102/" title="outside Lucky Lupitas by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="outside Lucky Lupitas" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8025/7513578102_08c19c2eb1.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We stopped in for lunch on a Friday. We arrived before noon and the place looked empty from the outside. As we went inside, we found some funky Latin American decor and more people than we expected. Still a few empty tables though so no wait for us!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513579742/" title="inside Lucky Lupitas by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Lucky Lupitas" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7110/7513579742_c8b96a74c9.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
For those perplexed by some of the words appearing in the menu, the board on the wall has some helpful explanations.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513616262/" title="Say What??? by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Say What???" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8013/7513616262_bb28785c1e.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
We decided to start with Jarritos ($5.50 each, imported from Mexico) and Guacamole ($8.90). The drinks were very refreshing with the seasoned corn chips (totopos) and guacamole dip. A very nice start to the meal.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513581420/" title="Jarritos ($5.50 each) & Guacamole ($8.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Jarritos ($5.50 each) & Guacamole ($8.90)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7247/7513581420_870ced13df.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Next course: tacos! Left is the chicken, Taco de pollo ($5) and right is the beef, Taco de carne ($5.50). Both come in a soft corn tortilla. The chicken is accompanied by cilantro (corriander), jicama (sweet root vegetable), salsa & cascabel aioli (chilli garlic sauce). The salsa is fairly light on in terms of chilli. If you like a bit of spicy kick in your taco, you should make use of the variety of hot sauces on the table. The beef taco was definitely my favourite. Along with the awesome & flavorful beef was radish, guacamole, salsa & cabbage. The Taco de carne gets a huge tick of approval from me.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513582528/" title="Taco de pollo ($5) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Taco de pollo ($5)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8025/7513582528_993dfa7af2_n.jpg" width="195" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513584258/" title="Taco de carne ($5.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Taco de carne ($5.50)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8427/7513584258_e5eedd2417_n.jpg" width="195" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Darren loved his Lucky Ribs ($23.90), wood smoked & slow cooked beef short ribs (minimum 400 grams). The ribs come with a choice of two house made sauces: Chipotle BBQ or Chimichurri. The Chimichurri is a vinegar-based sauce. Being a BBQ fan he went with the Chipotle, which was an excellent choice.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513614690/" title="Lucky Ribs ($23.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Lucky Ribs ($23.90)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8428/7513614690_28b7745301.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The beef itself was a relatively dry style, similar to beef I've experienced in Mexico. The sauce ensured it wasn't too dry. There was plenty of Mexican flavour and the meat came easily off the bone. I managed to steal a couple of bites off the plate before it was demolished.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7513618186/" title="Ribs aftermath by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Ribs aftermath" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8284/7513618186_599f77a785.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Overall, we had an excellent lunch at Lucky Lupitas. I hear the owner is from Washington DC, which I don't usually associate with great Mexican food. However, he has clearly done a lot of traveling in Latin America and has managed to bring some authentic Latin flavours and ingredients all the way to Adelaide. I'm looking forward to going back to try the elotes (corn on the cob), quesadillas, and hamburguesas. I've also heard good things about the Prickly Pear Margaritas. For those who live in the area, take away is also available.<br />
<br />
<br />
Update 25 August 2012: Made a return visit tonight and managed to get a table when the doors opened at 5:30. Tonight we had an amazing dinner and got to try a few new things. First, Elotes ($4.50 each) - grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayonesa, cheese & lime. The chipotle mayo had a nice kick to it and the cheese added an interesting texture and of course more flavour. Really enjoyable and a great starter. My photo doesn't really show it very well but I was especially impressed that they're served in an awesome corn shaped serving dish as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7856139168/" title="Elotes ($4.50 each) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Elotes ($4.50 each)" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8438/7856139168_9a09eab800.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Next was the Quesadilla de Pollo y Championes ($15.90) - grilled chicken & mushrooms with cheese, chipotle, onions & spinach with salsa & guacamole. This is the spiciest dish I've had at Lupitas so far. I loved the mushrooms and spinach - two ingredients I've not tried in a quesadilla before. It was also chock-a-block full of chicken so made for a very filling and satisfying dish.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7856144960/" title="Quesadilla de Pollo y Championes ($15.90) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Quesadilla de Pollo y Championes ($15.90)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7263/7856144960_bce2bd4670.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
There's also a new item on the menu - Duck Taco ($6.25). This is the first and best duck taco I have ever eaten. The duck was super moist and tender. If you like duck, this is definitely the taco for you.<br />

Adelaide is very Lucky to have Lupitas in town. This place is going to be in high demand for quite some time.<br />

This is a family run business that has been serving up delicious, warm buns since 1989 (23 years and counting!). They're located at the Chinatown end of the markets near the souvenir shops. The signage has a classic 90s look and I hope they never change it.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/20147392/" title="Nanna Hot Bake by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Nanna Hot Bake" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/15/20147392_93eb4a2f30.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />

Steamy buns, fresh out of the oven. So inviting!<br />

<br />
The most popular item seems to be the Nanna Hot Dog ($1.80). Over the years I've witnessed several large orders being picked up involving white cake boxes filled with Nanna Hot Dogs. This is a beautiful sight indeed. If you need more than about 10, it's probably best to pre-order.<br />

<br />
<br />
The Coconut Swirl is sweet, buttery and moist with plenty of coconut inside. Protip: Unravel the layers as you eat.<br />

<br />
<br />
The Butter Sugar Bun ($1.80) is a light fluffy bun with a sinful pocket of melted butter and sugar in the middle.<br />

<br />
<br />
Darren's favourite is the Custard Polo ($1.80). This bun has a dense yellow custard inside and a slightly crunchy top.<br />

<br />
<br />
There are plenty more sweet and savory items on the menu such as the Coconut Tart or Sweet Egg Tart ($1.60), BBQ Pork Bun ($1.80), Chicken Hotpot Bun ($1.80), and the list goes on. The buns are best served warm. If yours have cooled, just ask them to warm them up for you in the microwave.<br />

<br />
Nanna's is an Adelaide small business that serves up buns with a homemade look, taste, and feel that warm your heart as well as your belly. Next time you're at the Adelaide Central Markets, grab a Nanna's or two for some perfect on-the-go shopping fuel.<br />

If you love Ferrero Rocher, go for the Cocolat Rocher gelato, which was named Champion in the 2011 Australia Grand Dairy Awards and claimed Gold in the 2010 South Australia Dairy Awards. The <a href="http://www.cocolat.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=3" target="_blank">full list of flavours</a> is available on their <a href="http://www.cocolat.com.au/" target="_blank">website</a>. The shop has an adequate number of tables, but it usually gets quite busy after 7pm so it's best to arrive early if you want to avoid the crowds.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7566380738/" title="inside Cocolat by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Cocolat" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8424/7566380738_9e26b87f71.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
When it comes to blocks of chocolate, one of my favourites would have to be Cadbury's Top Deck - milk chocolate with creamy white chocolate on top. I had never experienced a block of Top Deck chocolate before coming to Australia and I fell in love with the stuff at first square. At Cocolat, you can order your Top Deck in liquid form as a hot chocolate. The Cocolat hot chocolates are generally quite milky, but I enjoy the combination of the white chocolate and milk chocolate flavours in the Top Deck so it's my pick from the drinks menu.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7566379618/" title="Top Deck Hot Chocolate by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Top Deck Hot Chocolate" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/7566379618_1038d72883.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />
<br />
In terms of desserts, you have an entire display case to choose from full of cakes, muffins, cupcakes, and handmade chocolate truffles. If you can't decide, I strongly recommend the Peanut Butter Brownie for only $5.50. It's a dense peanut buttery base with a fluffy chocolate top. If you love Reese's and/or peanut butter with chocolate, you're going to love this one. It comes with some melted swirled chocolate and whipped cream on the plate, but a cup of creamy French Vanilla gelato (winner of Gold in the 2010 South Australia Dairy Awards) compliments the brownie perfectly!<br />
<br />

Pearl's Diner, named after the Burger Theory truck Pearl, opened for the first time on 6 June 2012. (hooray!)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470753410/" title="Pearl's Diner by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pearl's Diner" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8011/7470753410_22cc824d09.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Opening hours are very limited so you'll need to check <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pearlsdiner" target="_blank">Facebook</a> or <a href="https://twitter.com/PearlsDiner" target="_blank">Twitter</a> to plan your visit. If the church pew waiting area is empty when you arrive, you might be lucky enough to snag a table straight away. They don't take bookings so it's first come, first served.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470760064/" title="waiting area by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="waiting area" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8014/7470760064_c220123fcc.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We arrived early in the service, which allowed us to avoid the queue. The Pearl's menu consists of burgers & fries, omelettes, fried chicken & coleslaw, chili & cornbread, waffles, milkshakes and coffee. Once you've carefully made your selections and made a mental note of your table number, head up to the front counter to place your order and pay.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470762964/" title="got a table by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="got a table" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8010/7470762964_acbb34fef5.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
On our first visit, we went with a tested favourite - a #1 Burger (lettuce, tomato, American cheese & truck sauce) with fries, $13. It's a really good burger and it's nice to be able to eat it indoors and on a proper plate.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470766686/" title="#1 Burger & Fries ($13) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="#1 Burger & Fries ($13)" height="400" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7261/7470766686_4ca772fe36.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Another bonus for the burger experience at Pearl's is that you can add a milkshake to your order. Choices are Vanilla, Chocolate or Coffee, $6 each. We chose Chocolate and it was thick with a good chocolate flavour. A silver milkshake mixer cup instead of the glass would really top off the experience.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470768164/" title="Chocolate Milkshake ($6) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Chocolate Milkshake ($6)" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8024/7470768164_09659dbd88.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
The Belgian waffles (from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/La-Waffle/240514589313656" target="_blank">La Waffle</a>) have a great, full flavour. I went with the maple syrup and vanilla ice cream option ($8), but you can also get your waffle with icing sugar or cinnamon sugar ($5) or Belgian chocolate, berries and vanilla ice cream ($10). The vanilla ice cream was full of vanilla bean flavour and very moreish.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470769916/" title="Belgian Waffle w/maple syrup & vanilla bean ice cream ($8) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Belgian Waffle w/maple syrup & vanilla bean ice cream ($8)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7252/7470769916_073297f43e.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Hiding under the Sides list at the bottom of the menu is this Pork Bun ($7). It's a Breadtop bun filled with 14-hour smoked Berkshire pork in a tomato BBQ sauce. This is a must try if you're a fan of BBQ pork, but be warned that it is a small snack size serve and not a meal in itself.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7470772012/" title="Pork Bun ($7) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Pork Bun ($7)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7470772012_4fbd097e63.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
We're lucky to have this food venue in the suburbs of Adelaide because there's nothing else like it around. I look forward to watching the evolution of Pearl's Diner in the future. I would love to see some vinyl & booth seating and some biscuits & cream gravy on the menu one day. Serving sizes are small here, but this could be a good thing as it would be very easy to overeat since it all tastes so good. Quality ingredients and classic American flavours are what will keep me coming back.<br />

It's just across Payneham Road from one of our favourite Korean restaurants, <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/sushi-gallery-adelaide-south-australia.html" target="_blank">Sushi Gallery</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377826654/" title="Bread Garden entrance by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Bread Garden entrance" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8002/7377826654_be1c59262e.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Bread Garden is similar to <a href="http://thelonelyplate.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/breadtop-is-in-adelaide.html" target="_blank">Breadtop</a>, but it's a one of a kind gourmet bakery and not a franchise. Because of its smaller scale, there's more love and attention to detail in the baked goods at Bread Garden.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377838402/" title="inside Bread Garden by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside Bread Garden" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5191/7377838402_f3be1d7195.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The decor is eclectic and draws you in as soon as you walk through the door. There are comfy tables and chairs, which make "eating in" all the more enjoyable. To get started, you'll need to pick up a plastic tray and tongs to gather your selections.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377836884/" title="Bread Garden is heavenly by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Bread Garden is heavenly" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/7377836884_df16eaa86b.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
At Bread Garden, everything is made with New Zealand butter and filtered water - no margarine, shortening or preservatives. It all looked so delicious - fluffy, shiny buns and loaves of all shapes, colours and sizes. I seriously wanted to buy one of everything. To make matters worse, this man was going around brushing the pastries with melted butter. Evil!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377867462/" title="brushing butter on top by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="brushing butter on top" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8027/7377867462_18fc2600d8.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
One of my favourite savoury options is this amazing Sausage and Lots Leaf Bread aka "The Leaf" ($3.20). It has slices of sausage, corn, cheese, tomato sauce and mayo inside. Absolutely irresistible!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377863796/" title="Sausage and Lots Leaf Bread ($3.20) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Sausage and Lots Leaf Bread ($3.20)" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8143/7377863796_1cca5a4cba.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
There are also plenty of great sweets such as the Blueberry & Creamcheese bun ($2.40). As the name suggests, it's got plump blueberries and smooth cream cheese in the middle. The bun itself is ultra soft and moist.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7377830468/" title="Blueberry & Creamcheese ($2.40) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Blueberry & Creamcheese ($2.40)" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8164/7377830468_3cfca45a91.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
One of the cutest buns has to be the Smile Custard Bun ($2.00). This one is sure to put a smile on your dial.<br />
<br />

<br />
There's quite an extensive drinks menu as well, including coffees, teas, iced drinks, shakes, fruit ice crushers, and ice shavers. Darren had a coffee and said it was very good, smooth, high quality coffee. He was very impressed. Here's the small Latte ($3.30).<br />
<br />

<br />
We couldn't resist taking a Chocolate Croissant ($2.00) for the road. Boy is this a bargain! We zapped it in the microwave for about 10 seconds and it was incredibly good. Perfect croissant pastry and a good amount of dark chocolate inside. Yes, please!<br />
<br />

<br />
They sell made to order cakes as well. This one on display looked amazing! They've also got cake slices for sale.<br />

<br />
Bread Garden is open 8:30am to 7pm (to 9pm on Friday), closed Tuesdays. This place is so good, we're already planning our next visit.<br />

It's open 6 days a week, closed Mondays.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/7276134946/" title="Steven ter Horst by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Steven ter Horst" height="400" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7072/7276134946_8a065cab7b.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Steven ter Horst clearly has a great deal of love and respect for chocolate and his shop is filled with proof that he has done his chocolate homework. The small and beautifully decorative chocolates in the glass case are perfect for boxing up as a gift or to take home for later.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6895548597/" title="The chocolate counter by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="The chocolate counter" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7210/6895548597_0590a1b142.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Chocolate also comes in liquid form at Steven ter Horst and I love this stuff. It's very concentrated and full flavoured. It's like a dark chocolate, but without the bitterness. I don't know how he does it. For those who don't want to drink their chocolate, there are plenty of coffee and tea options as well as house made sparkling lemonade, orange or ginger drinks. Definitely something for everyone.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6895551275/" title="Large Hot Chocolate ($6.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Large Hot Chocolate ($6.50)" height="400" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7177/6895551275_bc556b7393.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
The desserts are all spectacular and most of them contain that ridiculously good chocolate. The options do change, but it's hard to go wrong here.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6895547235/" title="chocolate cakes and tarts by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="chocolate cakes and tarts" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7068/6895547235_beda8b4dc1.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Try the Chocolate Cloud ($8.50) to ensure that you experience Steven's chocolate in its full glory.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6895552173/" title="Chocolate Cloud ($8.50) by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Chocolate Cloud ($8.50)" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7192/6895552173_7ae5a21bd9.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The Chocolate Cloud is chocolate mousse, vanilla cream and crunchy cocoa nib disc over a flourless chocolate sponge. It's beautifully light and deliciously rich at the same time.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/6895553055/" title="inside the Chocolate Cloud by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="inside the Chocolate Cloud" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7052/6895553055_c97382b364.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The Salted Caramel Truffle Tart ($6.50) is another winner as it achieves that delicate balance between salty and sweet. Underneath the decadent chocolate is the perfect compliment of gooey salted caramel.<br />

<br />
<br />
Not to be forgotten is the Chocolate Truffle Tart ($8.50). This one is luscious dark chocolate truffle ganache over a base of crunchy hazelnut praline, served with berry coulis. This one also comes in a round 20cm tart ($30) for those of you with guests or a large chocolate loving family.<br />

<br />
<br />
There's even an option for citrus lovers called Lemon Lust ($8.50). It's made of a lemon mousse dome with a praline cream centre and cocoa sponge. The lemon is the star here, with the chocolate playing a supporting role.<br />

It's difficult to leave Steven ter Horst Chocolatier without a smile on your face, a bounce in your step, and of course some more of that chocolate to take home for later. Chocolate aficionados, this place is definitely worth your visits.<br />
<br />

We stay in Ballarat every time on our way to Melbourne just so we can wake up and go straight to L'Espresso.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/2157978544/" title="Inside L'Espresso by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Inside L'Espresso" height="400" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2394/2157978544_79567c4db8.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
They're in one of Ballarat's cool heritage buildings on Sturt Street and there's always some smooth tunes playing from their wall of CDs. The chalkboard to the left of the entrance shows a list of new arrivals in their music collection.<br />

<br />
This is a real cafe with all the good stuff including a coffee machine made by Faema, Italy’s number one professional espresso machine manufacturer.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/2334709310/" title="Darren says the coffee is awesome by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Darren says the coffee is awesome" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2017/2334709310_a7b81e800d.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The coffee, according to my cafe latte drinking hubby, is superb. Just like what you would find in some of Europe's best cafes. Smooth and delicious.<br />

<br />
If you aren't a coffee drinker, I recommend the fresh squeezed orange juice. There's minimal pulp and the taste is absolutely perfect.<br />

<br />
And here it is, my favourite breakfast in all of Australia! It's the Free Range Eggs (scrambled) with Bacon Tomato and Toast ($14.50). The eggs are silky smooth and perfectly cooked. The bacon is lean and tasty. The tomatoes are a deep red colour, not that pale supermarket crap, and nicely grilled with a beautiful pesto on top. The toast is fluffy turkish bread with a slight toasted crunch on the outside and soft in the middle. And oh the butter!<br />

<br />
Or here's the Eggs Benedict ($16.50) with those grilled tomatoes, poached free range eggs, grilled ham and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/natmeister/2334708836/" title="Yum by natmeister, on Flickr"><img alt="Yum" height="400" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3176/2334708836_b1a50b231e.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
There are plenty of other options for breakfast too such as fritters, pancakes, lamb's fry, muesli, toast, croissants, etc. I'm sure you'll find plenty to love. L'Espresso is also open for lunch everyday, serving up traditional Italian fare like pastas and open focaccias. They're sometimes open on Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner as well. If you're in Ballarat, don't pass up the opportunity to visit L'Espresso!<br />
